It wasn’t quite like the “shot heard ‘round the world,” but it was a shot that certainly rocked the world of one Alt-Left protester in Phoenix recently who showed up to violently demonstrate against a political rally staged by President Trump.
As reported by Townhall’s Matt Vespa, Trump was at the rally, trashing both U.S. senators from Arizona, #NeverTrumper’s Jeff Flake and John McCain, then went after the media (again) which, naturally, triggered the latest (at the time) meltdown on CNN.
Outside of the venue where the president spoke, Alt-Left protestors did what they normally do in the age of Trump: Throw rocks and bottles at police officers because thus far they’ve managed to get away with it.
But one guy didn’t get away it on the mean streets of Phoenix, as Vespa noted:
…[F]or one protester, one kick to a tear gas canister is probably going to ruin his week, as police then shot him in the genitals with a pepper ball. I mean it was a bullseye hit. The impact knocked the hell out of this person, dropping him to the ground before being helped by a fellow left wing demonstrator and taken off the street.
Insert the “Laugh Out Loud” emoji here.
Let’s cut to the video:
“Yeah, the police are not messing around,” said one local news reporter who witnessed the ‘shooting.’ “If you’re out here on the streets in Phoenix, go home,” he urged.
There were no deaths but police arrested four people, according to local media reports.
Police brutality? Hardly. As reported by 3TV/CBS 5:
According to Sgt. Howard with Phoenix police, some people in the crowd began to throw rocks, bottles and other projectiles at police and someone in the crowd dispersed tear gas in the area.
Howard said the first gas that was dispersed came from someone in the crowd, not from police. Howard also said that some people in the crowd toppled the pedestrian fencing that was meant to create a safe zone for protesters.
So in other words, Alt-Left protesters who have used violence regularly in the past to disrupt rallies and political free speech events held by conservatives, supporters of the president and the president himself thought they were simply going to stage a repeat of those tactics. Phoenix police had other ideas.
And frankly, Phoenix police had the right idea. (Related: Trump invades Phoenix, declares victory as Alt-Left heads explode (again).)
After learning that even the Obama administration had determined the Marxist-anarchist group Antifa was a domestic terrorist organization, it has become clear that not only are members of this group wholly responsible for most of the political violence we’ve seen committed for well over a year, they are among the worst possible offenders.
They’re terrorists, after all — so why aren’t they being arrested and tried as terrorists?
I’m all about the First Amendment, as most Americans are. But groups like Antifa, Black Lives Matter and others on the Left are only about speech they agree with, even though that’s not what our founders had in mind when they enshrined freedom of speech, of the press, and of peaceful assembly into the Constitution. They envisioned all forms of speech, from all kinds of people and groups — even those whose message is abhorrent to the vast majority of us.
And speaking of that freedom to assemble, when did that start to include a “freedom to assemble non-peacefully for the purposes of injuring people and destroying property?” I don’t read that section anywhere in the Constitution, let alone the First Amendment.
While we rightly laugh at the jerk in Phoenix who got what was coming to him, it’s past time to realize there is a larger problem associated with protesting and demonstrating in the Trump age: That it comes with acts of terrorism, which are supposed to be highly illegal.
When the government begins charging and punishing purposeful violence committed at political events with the intent to injure, intimidate and shut down speech as acts of terrorism, I guarantee the BS violence will cease.
