Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Oct. 9, that the atrocities carried out by Hamas during its recent attack on Israel mirrored those perpetrated by the jihadist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
“The atrocities committed by Hamas have not been seen since ISIS atrocities. Bound children executed along with their families. Young men and women shot in the back, executed. Other horrors I won’t describe here,” Netanyahu said.
“We have always known who Hamas is. Now the entire world knows. Hamas is ISIS. And we will defeat it just like the enlightened world defeated ISIS. This vile enemy wanted war and it will get war.”
With Hamas attacks on Israel contained by destructive airstrikes into Gaza, there is no sign of the conflict declining in spite of calls for de-escalation from the international community.
Netanyahu promised to “change the Middle East” in reaction to Hamas’ shock attack over the weekend. (Related: Netanyahu promises to turn Gaza into “rubble” following Hamas attack – they will pay “unprecedented price.”)
“What Hamas will experience will be difficult and terrible. We are going to change the Middle East,” Netanyahu told officials visiting Jerusalem from the country’s south. “This is only the beginning. We are all with you and we will defeat them with force, enormous force. What we will do to our enemies in the next few days will echo for generations.”
Israeli death squads declared on Monday they would initiate assassination attempts against Hamas commanders, repeating Netanyahu’s words that Gaza’s leaders present a threat comparable with that of ISIS.
“We are going to act toward Hamas in every way like the West treated Daesh [ISIS]. Operationally, that means eradicating their leaders and fighters. But there will be international and diplomatic implications as well,” an Israeli government official said in an interview with The Times on Monday.
Israeli forces will now be searching for targets in territories outside of Gaza, where some Hamas officials have looked for refuge. Among them is Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh, who has sought refuge outside of Gaza and now living in Qatar, which has sent hundreds of millions of dollars to Gaza in recent years. Haniyeh earlier stated that Palestinian groups would look to extend operations, going all the way to the West Bank and Jerusalem.
More than 1200 Israeli soldiers and civilians were shot dead or blown up to pieces in rocket attacks launched by the Palestinian gunmen on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Palestinians cut down some 260 innocent people at a music festival in a cruel, surprise offensive.
In retaliation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and air force battered the Gaza Strip with air strikes and missile attacks, claiming they struck more than 1,000 Hamas targets in two days.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said officials will cut electricity to the Gaza Strip and close off the entry of food and fuel, announcing his troops are “fighting barbaric [terrorists] and will respond accordingly.”
The measures will basically achieve siege-like conditions that will see the millions of Palestinians living in the small, fenced-in area start to starve as they are attacked from the skies.
The declaration comes as Israeli soldiers supported by helicopters killed at least two gunmen who crossed the northern border from Lebanon.
Netanyahu formally declared war on Oct. 8, and the IDF Ground Forces enlisted about 300,000 reservists, indicating further fighting awaits with a potential ground assault into Gaza. The Israeli prime minister has pledged to totally destroy “the military and governing capabilities” of Hamas, which is deeply embedded in Gaza and has governed unopposed since 2007.
Meanwhile, Abu Obeida, the spokesman of Hamas’ armed wing, said on Monday night in reaction to Israel’s aerial attacks that the group will kill one Israeli civilian captive whenever Israel targets civilians in their homes in Gaza “without prior warning.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen responded by warning Hamas against harming any of the hostages, saying: “This war crime will not be forgiven.”
