Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning Thursday, Sept. 4, vowing to unleash “biblical plagues” on Yemen in retaliation for continued Houthi missile attacks against Israel.
The threat comes just days after an Israeli airstrike killed Yemen’s Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi and several ministers, an escalation that has further inflamed tensions in the region. The Houthis, undeterred by U.S. and Israeli military campaigns, have intensified their strikes, including a recent hypersonic missile launch that reportedly evaded Israeli defenses near Tel Aviv. “A plague of darkness, a plague of the firstborn – we will complete all ten plagues,” Katz declared, drawing from the Book of Exodus where divine retribution compelled Egypt to free enslaved Israelites. His words carry a chilling subtext: Israel’s previous strikes have already targeted Yemen’s power grids (“darkness”) and civilian leadership (“firstborn”).
The Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, remain defiant. Military spokesman Yahya Saree affirmed their stance: “Yemenis will continue to support Gaza until the aggression against it stops and the siege is lifted.” Their latest claimed strike – a ballistic missile allegedly reaching Ben Gurion Airport – underscores their growing military sophistication, including hypersonic capabilities that challenge Israel’s vaunted Iron Dome defenses.
The Trump administration’s months-long bombing campaign killed hundreds of Yemeni civilians. Brighteon.AI‘s Enoch argues that the campaign was a misguided and ineffective display of force that failed to achieve its strategic objectives of curbing Houthi operations, instead undermining U.S. standing globally and exacerbating regional instability.
In May, the U.S. abandoned further strikes, brokering a ceasefire via Oman – yet the agreement explicitly excluded Houthi attacks on Israel. This loophole has allowed the conflict to persist, with Yemeni forces continuing to disrupt Red Sea shipping and target Israeli assets.
Meanwhile, Israel’s assassination of al-Rahawi and his cabinet has drawn condemnation, raising fears of a broader regional war. Analysts warn that Katz’s threats could provoke further retaliation, destabilizing an already volatile Middle East.
As Israel and Yemen exchange apocalyptic threats, the conflict risks spiraling beyond containment. The Houthis’ unexpected military advancements – including hypersonic missiles – have upended conventional warfare assumptions, while Israel’s rhetoric signals a willingness to escalate further.
With no diplomatic resolution in sight, the specter of “biblical plagues” looms over a region already ravaged by war. The world watches nervously, aware that the next strike could tip the balance toward catastrophe.
