A 71-year-old man was shot dead in Chicago’s Chinatown on Tuesday afternoon. Woom Sing Tse was out to get a newspaper, and the attack was seemingly unprovoked.

The victim’s own daughter teaches at the elementary school nearby the scene. It’s said that she likely heard the gunshots personally, and the same goes for students who were reportedly having recess outside when the killing happened.

A 23-year-old suspect allegedly shot at Tse from his car. Then he got out of the vehicle to shoot the elderly victim again, multiple times at close range.
Charges are pending but WGN 9 says police found a gun inside the suspect’s car. Chicago’s CBS outlet describes how John C. Haines Elementary School went into lockdown immediately afterward.
“Police were able to locate the car on the expressway when it fled and crashed near Jackson and the Kennedy ExWay,” @CPD1617Scanner said in a follow-up post.
A local reporter shared a photo of Chicago police apprehending the shooter.

Name of the suspect hasn’t been released but sources indicate that the person in question was “arrested for illegal gun possession last December.”
While further details about the suspect in this case are not yet known, what is being reported is how Woom Sing Tse lived the American dream. These details were made available through a Chicago Sun-Times interview with Tse’s family.
“My dad was the epitome of the immigrant coming to America and taking chances,” Tse’s son William told the paper.
Woom Sing Tse came to America half a century ago “with a hundred dollars in his pocket” and worked his way up to becoming a restaurant owner. He retired nine years ago but kept up with his hobby of being a ping pong player.
On the day of his daath, Tse had offered to get his newspaper on his wife’s behalf. She thought it was too cold outside.
Tse’s cousin Winnie, who lived next door to Woom, described him as a good man. “He took care of his family, made money and took care of the three kids. He was a good husband and father.”
The killing of Tse happened in the 25th ward whose Alderman was vague in his public acknowledgement of the situation.

It leaves Chicago Chinatown residents questioning their safety. But in the meantime the community is planning a prayer Vigil for this Friday night at 7 pm. Tse’s children will be in attendance.
Woom Sing Tse is further survived by nine grandchildren.
