Since President Donald Trump’s return to office in January 2025, his administration has made immigration enforcement a cornerstone of its agenda – with approximately 40,000 arrests of illegal immigrants reported.
Border czar Tom Homan announced the figures during a roundtable discussion in Sarasota, Florida, hosted by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Homan, alongside former acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf and New College of Florida President Richard Corcoran, defended the administration’s hardline approach, emphasizing that the majority of those arrested posed significant public safety or national security threats.
Homan did not mince words when criticizing the previous administration’s immigration policies, accusing it of undermining federal law by restricting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from arresting individuals solely for being in the country illegally. He argued that the prior administration had effectively rewritten immigration statutes by instructing ICE officers to focus only on those convicted of serious crimes, a policy he described as “garbage” that has now been overturned. Under the Trump administration, the focus has shifted back to enforcing immigration laws as written. “If you’re in this country illegally, you’ve got a problem,” Homan said. “We’re prioritizing public safety threats first, but let’s be clear: it’s not OK to be here illegally. It’s against the law, and it’s not OK to cross the border illegally.”
The administration’s aggressive stance has not been without controversy. Homan addressed ongoing legal challenges to the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a centuries-old law that President Trump invoked to deport individuals deemed threats to national security. A federal judge recently blocked deportations under the act, but Homan dismissed the ruling as overreach. According to the border czar, no judge should have the authority to override the president’s executive orders, especially when it comes to national security.
Homan also called on the U.S. Supreme Court to clarify the issue of birthright citizenship, a topic that has long been a flashpoint in the immigration debate. He argued that the Fourteenth Amendment, which grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, should not automatically apply to children of illegal immigrants. “I’m not a lawyer, but I can read,” Homan said, suggesting that the amendment’s language is open to interpretation and requires judicial clarification.
The second Trump administration’s approach to immigration has drawn both praise and criticism. Supporters argue that strict enforcement is necessary to protect national security and uphold the rule of law, while critics contend that the policies are overly harsh and risk violating the rights of immigrants.
Homan, however, remains steadfast – vowing that the administration will continue to deport criminals and enforce immigration laws despite legal challenges. As the debate over immigration rages on, one thing is clear: the Trump administration is doubling down on its commitment to securing the border and enforcing immigration laws, even in the face of significant opposition.
